What to know about driving in Turkey

The road network in Turkey is well-maintained and comprehensive with clear signage. Some visitors can be nervous about driving in another country. Yet driving in Turkey shouldn’t pose much of a problem. Read on for tips on what to know about driving here.

Q: What side of the road should I drive on in Turkey?

A: Motorists drive on the right and overtake on the left in Turkey. Priority at junctions is given to vehicles travelling from the right, those on a main road and vehicles already on a roundabout.

Q: What is the drink-drive limit?

A: The legal blood alcohol limit in Turkey is set at 0.05% - meaning it’s safer not to drink at all - and there is a zero-tolerance policy for anyone towing a caravan or trailer.

Q: What are the rules on seatbelts?

A: All passengers must wear seatbelts where they are fitted.

Q: What is the speed limit in Turkey?

A: The speed limit is set at 50km/h in built-up areas, 90km/h outside urban areas and 120km/h on motorways.

Q: Are there toll roads in Turkey?

A: There are multiple toll roads and bridges in Turkey. These are payable either through a windscreen sticker, or vignette, which allows drivers to pay for travel without the need to stop, or a pre-payment card. Your rental company should provide one of these options with your hire car.

Q: Where can I park?

A: There are no parking ticket machines in Turkey. Parking officials collect fees for on-street parking. Make sure to park in designated parking areas to avoid any fines.

Q: What else should I know?

A: Be aware that while car horns are used frequently during the day on Turkish roads it is illegal to sound the horn after 10pm. If you park at the side of the road after dark you are required to leave the vehicle’s sidelights on. This rule does not apply in built-up areas if the vehicle can be seen from a distance of 150 metres.

Q: When is the cheapest time to hire a car in Turkey?

A: The cheapest months to hire a car in Turkey are outside the summer season in October to March. However,  booking your rental in advance through Penguin Car Hire is the best way to ensure you get the cheapest deals whenever you are travelling.
